Diverse Aspects of Tourism Research

Culture, in spite of being an abstract concept, manifests concretely through a series of elements produced by a certain society. In the regional scope, these traces are evidenced through numerous artifacts and manifestations that constitute the raw material of tourism. This article analyzes how the characteristics of regional culture are appropriated by tourism services in the Baixo Sao Francisco region, especially in the municipalities of Piranhas, Penedo and Piacabucu in Alagoas, and Caninde do Sao Francisco in Sergipe. The study is characterized as exploratory and, in addition to the bibliographic review, is based on field research carried out during the V Sao Francisco Expedition. The identification of tourism services meets the classification followed by the Tourism Characteristics Activities (ACTs) of the Ministry of Tourism. The paper concludes that, although in an unequal way between the types of business, the features of the regional culture, especially the Cangaco, are present in the characterization of tourist services, more significantly than the external elements.
