Resumo

Patients in intensive care units (ICUs) must be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team, in order to receive better treatment, aiming at faster recovery with the detection and treatment of the possible aggravating factors of the case. A 52-year-old patient was admitted to the ICU of a hospital after an 8-m fall that led to thoracic trauma that evolved with a ventilator-associated pneumonia and septic shock with a pulmonary focus. The physical exam showed dental elements 33 to 43 with several crown destructions due to a carious process and an ulcerative lesion on the apex of the tongue, induced by a biting-impact against the ventilator tube. Multiple tooth extractions were performed under local anesthesia, with no complications; after 1 week, the sutures were removed, and the tongue lesion was no longer present. The patient was kept under follow-up for a month, with good recovery, before being discharged from the hospital.
