Resumo

Verruciform xanthoma is a benign mucocutaneous lesion of unknown etiology characterized by the accumulation of histiocytes filled with lipids, below the epithelium; it may represent an unusual reaction or immune response to trauma or local epithelial damage. It typically affects the oral cavity, specifically the gum region and alveolar mucosa. The aim of this study was to report the case of a 58-year-old man with leukoderma with a circumscribed papillary lesion with verruciform surface and yellowish-color, located on the left lateral border of the tongue, in the region of the foliaceous papillae, of approximately 1 cm in diameter. During anamnesis, the patient reported habits of alcoholism and smoking in the past, with a history of cold sore and squamous papilloma in the oral cavity. The initial diagnostic hypothesis of oral lymphoepithelial cyst was replaced, after excisional biopsy, with an anatomopathological report of verruciform xanthoma, which is considered a rare lesion.
