Resumo

In the Far Western Santa Catarina State (FWSC), in Southern Brazil, upland rice is produced by family farming from local seeds, which are conserved by generations of farmers. Based on interviews with rural families from Anchieta and Guaraciaba municipalities, the landraces produced in the region, their origins, the time of conservation, the purpose of production, the characteristics of grains and the values of use and preferences were identified. The presence of different morphological groups of grains and the different values of use allow characterizing the FWSC as having a high diversity of landraces of upland rice, conserved primarily due to the culinary tradition of the maintaining families.
