Resumo

Conrad's memoir consists of excerpts from a daily journal written during overland travel in 1975 from Algiers to Bamako for a year's research toward his Ph.D. in African History from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London (defended 1981). The narrative presented here describes research with Bamako informants, in addition to experiences traveling to Segou and numerous other Malian towns and villages that were visited in pursuit of interviews with griots and other nyamakalaw including blacksmiths, leatherworkers et al. It recognizes helpful friends, fellow researchers, and Peace Corps Volunteers who provided various kinds of support essential to the research effort.
