Recognizing the contribution art has had in the Mayo Clinic environment since the original Mayo Clinic Building was finished in 1914, Mayo Clinic Proceedings features some of the numerous works of art displayed throughout the buildings and grounds on Mayo Clinic campuses, as interpreted by the author. Rhonda Tesch received her degree in graphic design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minnesota. She is adept at portraits in pencil or watercolor, and produces architectural illustrations and large commissioned works, but frequently returns to a tree and leaf motif. Her husband rescued a load of wood taken from a fallen barn, which she utilized through experimentation to hone the process of sanding, polishing, painting, and staining with many layers of acrylic to bring out the nature of the wood in the components to create her “mosaics.” She also paints in reverse relief, in which bold outlines are later filled in with color.1Waconia Artist Rhonda TeschSouthwest Metro Magazine.http://southwestmetromag.com/article/art/waconia-artist-rhonda-teschDate accessed: April 6, 2018Google Scholar Of her work she says, “I like folk art.” “And I'm drawn to things that have a history.”1Waconia Artist Rhonda TeschSouthwest Metro Magazine.http://southwestmetromag.com/article/art/waconia-artist-rhonda-teschDate accessed: April 6, 2018Google Scholar Mosaic Flower Painting, created with the signature acrylic and stained wood, consists of two 30×30-inch panels, which are a kaleidoscope of colors. Intricate cubes of pastels divided by grid-like boundaries generate into giant blossoms and leaves bordered by hues of blue to simulate the sky. The center of the right panel curlicues, while the center of the left panel kernels, perhaps to simulate pollen and stamen. Overall, the effect is one of looking at a pair of stained-glass windows. Tesch maintains a studio in her home and markets her art at the Mocha Monkey, a local coffee shop in Waconia, Minnesota. Mosaic Flower Painting pieces are located in the hallway to the Generose Building of Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus, Rochester, Minnesota.
