ResumoThe effects of various levels of glucose, nitrate, thiamine, potassium and phosphate on the production of sclerotia by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. were investigated by appropriate modifications of a synthetic agar medium. In the absence of any one of these nutrients there was either no growth and no sclerotial production (glucose, thiamine), or growth was poor with correspondingly few sclerotia (NO3, K and PO4). Raising the concentration of a particular nutrient up to a certain level increased the number of sclerotial initials and the number and weight of those which matured; beyond this no further increases were obtained unless the concentration of another nutrient was also increased. Other features which were influenced by these factors were the time after inoculation at which initials first appeared, the rate of initiation, the proportion of initials which matured and the distribution of the sclerotia on the colony.
