Resumo

The results are given of an abattoir survey of the incidence of first-instar Hypoderma bovis larvae in bovine spines during the winters of 1959–60 and 1960–61. Larvae were first seen in November, and maximum numbers were recovered in February and March. Few larvae remained in the spines by May. The maximum monthly degree of infection was 3.6 larvae per infected spine, recorded in January 1961. The maximum monthly percentage infection with live larvae was 44, increased to 59 by including spines which contained dead larvae and/or larval lesions. The spine of one animal contained 22 H. bovis larvae. Most of the larvae were recovered from the lumbar and posterior thoracic vertebrae, but larvae were found in practically all vertebrae at some time during the survey. It is suggested that most of the larvae both enter and leave the spinal canal through one or more foramina in the lumbar area. It seems probable that many, if not most, of the larvae which mature in the back have passed through the spinal canal.
