ResumoWater splitting via photocatalysis has the potential to produce clean, renewable hydrogen. Although various new photocatalysts have been reported, developing semiconductor materials that efficiently convert the energy in sunlight remains the primary challenge. This Perspective focuses on representative examples of particulate photocatalysts for overall water splitting. The design of both photocatalytic materials and overall systems intended for large-scale operation is discussed.
