ResumoSulfonamides are among the most widely used antibiotics in the world. They have been in clinical use since 1968. In primary care medicine, sulfonamides are used mainly to treat urinary tract as well as upper respiratory tract infections. These drugs have remained popular because they are well tolerated by patients, and they are relatively inexpensive. This article presents a comprehensive review of the pharmacology and clinical application of the two most frequently prescribed sulfonamides: sulfisoxazole and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
