Resumo

In the historiography on the Universidad Literaria de Guadalajara, certain events and characters have been given a place of privilege to explain the reasons for its founding and development. This paper seeks to contribute to the history of the establishment of that institution, approaching the regional environment around the powers and corporations. It also addresses some little-known aspects of one of the most influential actors in the creation of the university, and particularly of its educational model: Don Matías de la Mota Padilla. Many biographies of him have been written that give evidence of his insight and the social prestige he enjoyed, as well as his foresight and skill to relate to important actors of his time, all of which enabled him to undertake the creation of the most important educational institution in the region and Realm of New Galicia, the founding of a university.
