ResumoSingle crystal γ-MnOOH nanorods were successfully prepared by employing a hydrothermal process based on the direct reaction between potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and ethylene glycol (EG). It was found that the reaction time and temperature play important roles in the structural and morphological modifications. Our results show that the γ-MnOOH nanorods are formed through a lamellar growth, assembly and ripening process. Moreover, MnO2, Mn2O3, and Mn3O4 nanorods were obtained by the subsequent calcination of γ-MnOOH precursors under different temperatures and atmospheres. These one-dimensional manganese oxide and oxyhydroxide nanorods are expected to have possible novel properties and wide applications.
