Resumo

The article presents career survey on Dan Flavin, an artist. Flavin's four-decade career was almost wholly given over to working with fluorescent lights. Flavin's art evinces physical and conceptual development. Flavin mastered fluorescent's power to disrupt and reshape the space of a room, to dissolve a corner and affect every enclosing surface. The current retrospective demonstrates the consistency with which invention and pleasure outfox standardization and Minimalist orthodoxy in the work. If one spends time in an exhibition of lights by Flavin, and the bend-over-backwards circumspection of Minimalist criticism can seem quaintly beside the point.
