ResumoThe transfer of energy from wind to short surface waves through the viscous Reynolds stress in the immediate neighbourhood of the surface is explored. Resonance between the Tollmien-Schlichting waves for a given wind profile and the free-surface waves is shown to be an important possibility. Numerical results are given for water wave generation by a wind having a velocity profile that is linear in the neighbourhood of the surface and asymptotically logarithmic.
