ResumoAs we wrap up a busy 2009 we want to communicate several things, including thanking all of our reviewers and associate editors for 2008, announcing the award winners and providing an annual update on the status of the JOM. In general, the JOM continues to do very well as the leading journal in theory-driven, empirically based research of operations management. Recent citation impact factor scores place the JOM among the top OM research outlets. The most recent (2008) impact factor is 2.42, this means that the average article published in JOM is cited over two times in the 2 years following its publication. We are pleased that JOM had the highest impact factor among a group of select operations management journals including Management Science, Decision Sciences and Production and Operations Management. While the pure impact factor as calculated by ISI Thompson is important, we believe it is important to remove self-citation influence. Thus, Fig. 1 shows the impact factor as calculated with self-citations removed (i.e. citations from papers in JOM to other papers in JOM). While having an immediate impact is important, it is equally important that authors and journals have a lasting impact. Thus, Fig. 2 shows the H-index (the number of papers that have been cited at least H times) for twenty leading journals plus JOM. The list of journals as based on Business Week's list. We are pleased that JOM is ranked highly on this list since H-index is in part tied to the length of publication—more years of history provides more chances for the journal to be cited. Given the relative youth of JOM, its position on the list is notable. Impact factor trends for JOM and other top OM journals (with self-citations removed). H-Indices for 21 Leading Business Journals (data gathered from journal comparison service SC Imago Journal & Country Rank [http://www.scimagojr.com/index.php ]). “Culture, Development and OM Viewpoints in Asia” (deadline for papers was January 1, 2009) “Field Research in Operations & Supply Chain Management” (deadline for papers was March 1, 2009) “Operations Management, Entrepreneurship and Value Creation: Emerging Opportunities in a Cross-Disciplinary Context” (deadline for papers was May 31, 2009) Each of the special issues received over 30 submissions and has completed at least the first round of reviews. We anticipate publication of these issues in late 2010 and early 2011. In addition, a call for papers titled “Product Safety and Security in the Global Supply Chain” has recently been announced, to be edited by Ann Marucheck, University of North Carolina, Noel Greis, University of North Carolina, Linning Cai, Tsinghua University and Carlos Mena, Cranfield School of Management. The deadline for submissions for this special issue is March 1, 2010. Annual awards At the 2009 Academy of Management national conference we announced the winners of the annual journal awards. We selected six candidate papers for the 2008 Best Paper from the six journal issues published in 2008. Next these candidate papers were ranked independently by doctoral students in courses at Ohio State University and the Arizona State University. The top three papers were distributed to three associate editors for the JOM, who then ranked the papers. In both ranking processes, the participants evaluated the papers using criteria including the quality of the paper's contribution to OM theory, clarity of presentation, and methodological rigor. Each of the best paper winners received a plaque and a cash award ranging from $2500 for the winner to $1000 for each of the finalist papers. As has become an annual tradition, the paper finalists presented their paper in a session at the Academy of Management. The room was packed to the walls—you can listen/view a podcast of the session at: The 2008 Best Paper Award winner is “Understanding behavioral sources of process variation following enterprise system deployment,” Elliot Bendoly and Mark J. Cotteleer. Vol. 26, No. 1 (January 2008) The two Best Paper Honorable Mentions are “Creating consumer durable retailer customer loyalty through order fulfillment service operations,” Beth Davis-Sramek, John T.
