Resumo

The aim of the belief system is to communicate in a formal way the basic values, purposes and directions to the organization.These fundamental values are linked to the business strategy of the company.In order to do this research, the mission was considered, this is an instrument of the belief system and it establishes the direction of activities by the organizations.The mission statements can be influenced by internal or external factors in the organizations.From this point, this study evaluated the effectiveness of the mission statements, according to the model of Pearce and David (1987) and their relationship with contingencies factors.In order to test these predictions, based on the contingency theory, the research contemplated a sample of 364 companies in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru in 2015.It was used a qualitative technique for the hermeneutical analysis of the content of the missions.The second step contemplated quantitative analysis, using multiple linear regression.The results evidenced the rejection of the hypotheses, since only one of the contingencies factors (strategy) presented significance.One verified that none of the missions analysed presented all the eight elements from the model, most of them presented between two and four elements.Among these elements, the most frequently were service offered and own concept, they were found in more than 70% of the missions analysed.The hermeneutical analyses evidenced a wide range of words used in the construction of the mission, being the most frequent clients, quality, value development and shareholders.By reinforcing the importance of belief system, considering the role of the mission and showing that the dissemination of the elements can help companies in their strategies, this study contributes to the analysis of the relations between the contingencies factors and the mission statement effectiveness of the inserting a new perspective on the use of contingency theory, in which the use of secondary data was made in order to try to establish this relationship.
