ResumoIn the present research, laser hardening technique has been made used to improve the tribological and mechanical properties of SAE8620 HVD Material. Effect of different process parameter i.e., laser power, scanning speed, on microhardness and microstructure have been studied. Laser power was found to the most influencing parameter that increased the microhardness of the sample when treated with laser. Microhardness increased with increase in laser power that increases the service life of the SAE8620 HVD Material. Laser surface modification is found to be low cost and very effective technique to improve the service life of the components i.e., gear, in automobile industry. In this study we investigate the surface properties of SAE8620 HVD material for transmission gear. The co-relation of laser processing parameter with surface properties is obtained.
