Resumo

The seminal role of Mahorner and Goss in the development of anterior properitoneal placement for inguinofemoral herniation of large "angle iron" prostheses is outlined. An experience with 135 insertions in 132 patients using almost sutureless polypropylene mesh with parietalization of the cord is recounted. The advantage of deep insertion beneath the epigastric vasculature and the posterior lamina of transversalis fascia is emphasized. A prospective study to compare superficial and deep prosthetic placement in the groin is recommended.
