Os movimentos sociais urbanos no Nordeste conheceram um crescimento significativo no inicio desta decada. O instrumento teorico de analise dos cientistas socias, porem, tem-se revelado fragil na compreensao maior deste fenomeno. Esta e a constatacao que inspira o autor a abordar a questao na perspectiva mais ampla das relacoes entre Estado e Sociedade civil, no contexto problematico da “adequacao contraditoria” entre capitalismo e democracia e, finalmente, na dialetica entre conflitos e legitimacao. Notas ainda provisorias que sugerem um caminho novo de analise, inserindo os MSU no processo de sua gestacao e na conjuntura de sua conformacao particular. Integral state, democracy and urban social movements. The urban social movements in the Northeast of Brazil experienced a period of significant growth at the beginning of the present decade. The set of thoretical tools used by social scientists in their analysis of society has, however, proved unequal to the task of achieving a deeper insigtht into the phenomenon in question. It is this observation that prompts the author to approach the question in the broader perspective of the “contradictory compatibility” between capitalism and democracy and finally, wiothin the framework of the dialectic between conflict and legitimacy. Theses still tentative notes suggest a new analytical approach, dissecting the urban social movements in the process of their gestation and in the circunstances of their particular conformation.
