ResumoThe Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra has a historical herbarium of medicinal plants from the nineteenth century, with about 1000 specimens. The idea of its creation came from Professor DoctorJulio de Sacadura Botte (Professor of Materia Medica, Pharmacologia e Pharmacia) who requested it to Professor Doctor Julio Augusto Henriques (Director of the Botanic Garden and Professor of BotânicaMedica). His Chief Gardener, Dr. Adolfo Moeller, was already the author of Catalogo das plantas medicinais que habitam no continente portugues, and Professor Julio Henriques instructed him to organizethe medicinal herbarium according to the therapeutic properties of the plants. A deep study about this herbarium is ongoing, but as far as we can reveal now, the main objective of it, is its important pedagogicrole to teach the students the medicinal plants and the medicinal properties.Nowadays, the plants are in good conservation condition, but the paper on which they are mounted is highly damaged and the specimens will be remounted on acid-free paper. A taxonomic revision will be alsocarried out, as well as creating a digital database of botanical vouchers, a photographic record and a compilation of medicinal uses. At the end of the project, all the information will be available on a website and will be published a book with the history of the creation of the herbarium, the taxonomic updating, the compilation of medicinal uses of the plants and their photographic record.
