Resumo

Portuguese architect Raul Lino (1879-1974) was a one of a kind figure in the Portuguese architectural scene. He is considered by some of the well-known historians one of the most important Portuguese architects from the 20th century. His eclectic and vast work had an enormous impact on the field, making him a gatekeeper who helped to shape architecture in Portugal. He was simultaneously conservative and revolutionary, traditional and audacious. His bold personality played a crucial role in shaping his sensibility. Raul Lino believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment. Raul was the face of a new dwelling typology that came to be known as Portuguese House”. In addition to the houses/ domestic architecture he developed, Raul Lino designed Sousa Martins Sanatorium opened on May 18th, 1907. This side of Raul’s work is not known or hasn’t been explored by most of the field expertises, most studies being focused on his domestic architecture only. The goal of this lecture is to highlight Raul’s transversal architecture doctrine throughout not just all the work he did in domestic architecture but specially in this medical facility that was the first hospital built specifically for the treatment of patients with pulmonary infections built by Queen Amelia (1865-1951).
