ResumoThe objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of the log-Pearson III probability distribution to the maximum annual flow series of the Pedro Osório and Passo do Ricardo stations located in the Mirim / RS Lagoon Basin, comparing the adjustment of this distribution in relation to the Gumbel distribution, which is commonly used. The daily fluviometric series were obtained through the Hidroweb -Agência Nacional de Águas database. The hydrological year was established starting in May and ending in April, for Pedro Osório (88641000) and Passo do Ricardo (88680000), both located in the hydrographic basin of the Mirim / RS lagoon .The maximum flow rates of the two seasons were adjusted to the Gumbel and log-Pearson III distributions for the 10, 20, 50 and 100 year return periods (TR) using the Chow-Gumbel method. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test was applied at a probability level of 5%.The results showed that the data come from the same population when they are adjusted log-distribution Pearson III.For the Gumbel distribution, the KS test rejected the hypothesis H0, indicating that the theoretical function does not represent the set of sample data.It is concluded that the most suitable distribution for estimating the project flows for these stations is the log-Pearson III distribution.
