ResumoIn the article, we analyze the trickster character Esmeraldo, from Memórias de um gigolô (1968), by the brazilian novelist Marcos Rey.The story is situated in the prolegomena of the conflicts and social and political uncertainties of the city of São Paulo and the dream of splendor of a "new republic" in Brazil.This work was made under the theoretical basis of some of the most important researchers of the picaresque novel and its developments in Brazil: Mario González (1988), Roberto Da Matta (1990), Jean Pierre Chauvin (2008), Altamir Botoso (2010).These studies, initially, allow to define elementary concepts about trickery, trickster and
