The potent antibiotic patulin (1) has been synthesized in six steps (41.3% overall yield) from 2-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-4-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-methyl]furan (2) and benzyloxyacetaldehyde (4).
