[(Me2PO···h ···OPMe2)PtHiPMe2OH)] is an extremely active homogeneous catalyst for the hydration of nitriles to amides: a mechanism involving intramolecular attack by a phosphine oxide on a nitrile within the co-ordination sphere of the platinum atom is suggested.
