ResumoThis paper discusses the decisions of the Supreme Court of Justice in which its main grounds are analyzed. The analysis was delineated to the period between 1829, the year in which the STJ started, and 1841, the date of the great judicial reform that substantially changed the organization of justice in Brazil. The Rio de Janeiro periodical, Correio Official (1833-1840), was chosen as sources of the study in which the decisions of the STJ were published almost daily.Decisions of this court were still consulted in the collection organized by Cândido Mendes de Almeida and Fernando Mendes de Almeida, from 1829 to 1883.Although this last source did not contain all the judgments of the period, the sentences were entirely rewritten. The content analysis was adopted from the methodological point of view, by means of which it was tried to discover the standards of the jurisprudence in relation to the citation of laws, doctrines and sentences.
