Resumo

Neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) was first described in 1824, with the observation that transection of the trigeminal nerve leads to degenerative changes in the cornea [1]. These corneal changes are secondary to altered cellular metabolism, which leads to accumulation of metabolites and subsequent tissue swelling, loss of vitality, and desquamation [2]. Reduction in corneal sensitivity or complete corneal anesthesia is the hallmark of NK and can lead to epithelial keratopathy, ulceration, and perforation [3].
