ABSTRACT: The female characters of Irish mythology have served as inspiration for contemporary Irish writers. Their stories are revisited to address issues relevant to the context of Ireland and the world today. This article features two short stories by the contemporary Irish writer Christine Dwyer Hickey , “Bridie's wedding”and“The house on Parkgate Street”, in which the stories of the goddess and saint Brigid and the mythological queen Grainne are reinvented. We make in this analysis a comparison of the representation of these characters in relation to their original myths and we also suggest a social reading for this reinvention in the scenario of the 21st century. RESUMO: As personagens femininas da mitologia irlandesa tem servido de inspiracao para escritores irlandeses contemporâneos. Suas historias sao recuperadas para tratar de assuntos relevantes ao contexto da Irlanda e do mundo atual. Esse artigo apresenta dois contos da escritora irlandesa contemporânea Christine Dwyer Hickey, “Bridie’s wedding” e “The house on Parkgate Street”, nos quais sao reinventadas as historias da deusa e santa Brigida e da rainha mitologica Grainne. Fazemos nessa analise uma comparacao da representacao dessas personagens em relacao aos seus mitos originais e sugerimos tambem uma leitura social para essa reinvencao no cenario do seculo XXI.
