Resumo

In The Early Days Of Hip Hop, Run-D.M.C.'s dismissal of the Calvin Klein brand name was a boast of neo-black power. Eventually, just like everybody else, hip hop got down with the big '80s – and urban culture's aspirations quickly turned into a yearning for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Ironically, the hip hop nation, once so proudly self-sufficient, became obsessed with the finer things in life: designer clothing, imported champagne, Cuban cigars, luxury automobiles, and fine jewelry. Hip hop players like Russell Simmons, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Master P have even gotten into the fashion game themselves with their own clothing lines. At around the same time, Chanel's head designer Karl Lagerfeld showed women in leather jackets and piles of fat gold chains that simultaneously nodded to the label's habit of overaccessorizing with tons of jewelry and hip hop's current cool de force.
