Resumo

The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Lausanne, Switzerland dates from approximately 1190-1232, and was consecrated in 1275. Sources for this poem include G.-A. Bridel and E. Bach, Lausanne: Promenades Historiques et Archéologiques (1931) and E. Diserens, La rose: Cathédrale de Lausanne (2000). Though the cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is God the Creator who is at the center of the rose window. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) is buried behind the apse of the church in Raron, Canton Valais, Switzerland. The church is on a cliff with a commanding view of the Rhône valley. In German, the inscription on his tombstone reads Rose, oh reiner Widerspruch, Lust,/Niemandes Schlaf zu sein unter soviel/Lidern. The four doctors of the Church referred to are Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory (Diserens, 17). Henry of Lausanne: died ca. 1148; refuted by St Bernard of Clairvaux; espoused a dualism antithetical to the Catholic Church.
