Resumo

In recent years, a growing contingent of leadership scholars and studies have begun to adopt a more explicit focus on time and the change of leader behaviors, both theoretically and empirically. This evolution of the literature stands in contrast to a historical focus on leader behaviors as relatively static and as emerging from stable predictors. However, this evolving segment of the science is still in its infancy; thus, the purpose of this symposium is to offer a view of the future for research on dynamic leader behaviors by providing theoretical and methodological guidance by leading scholars in this area. To accomplish this, four papers will be presented, each dealing with a unique way of conceptualizing the change of leader behaviors over time. The first of these papers integrates an episodic view of leader behaviors with a more stable view to examine how subordinates process episodes of leader consideration in light of the consistency of those behaviors. The second paper aims to experimentally induce change in leader behaviors by asking leaders to reflect on their best possible future selves on a recurring basis. Extending this recurring view, the third paper adopts a cyclical approach to leader behaviors by examining charismatic leader behaviors as it emerges from leaders’ circadian cycles. Finally, the fourth paper in this session adopts a theoretical approach to explaining leader behaviors as emerging from interactions with subordinates over time, with those behaviors continually evolving as interaction schemas change. By highlighting diverse theoretical and empirical approaches to studying leader behavior dynamism, this session serves as a gateway to a more complex consideration of time and change in the study of leader behaviors.
