Resumo

In 1922, in his poem The Backstreets of Moscow, Russian poet Sergey Yesenin wrote “God sent me to die in the backstreets/ and I can't go home any more”. His words seem to be echoed in those with which Ivan, the protagonist of the play Ivan and the dogs, recounts the hardship of finding himself living as a child on the streets of Moscow 70 years later. Written by Hattie Naylor and directed by Caitriona Shoobridge, Ivan and the dogs is based on true story of Ivan Mishukov, who was only 4 years old when he escaped from home and then spent the following 2 years living on the streets of Moscow with a pack of dogs as his only companions. Staged in the round at the Young Vic (London, UK) and superbly performed by Alex Austin, who realistically captures the movements, language, and psychology of little Ivan, the production is a delicate and wistful depiction of a life at the margin of society where hope is unexpectedly found in the company of dogs.
