ResumoIn 1991, an African-American drag queen ran for mayor of Chicago. “Once elected, the first thing I am going to do is change the police to the fashion police”, promised Joan Jett Blakk (off-stage, she was known as Terence Smith). “Who knows after that—dye the river pink on Fridays. I'll take it as it comes.” Blakk lost but people noticed her, and that was the point, after all. “We just wanted to increase gay visibility and fight a rising homophobia here in Chicago, but do it in a not-so-tense way that everyone could have fun with”, she later said.
