Resumoin the margins of a paper with shorthand symbols, arbitrary marks of the kind used by printers in the correction of proof sheets. Parker may have been one of the first teachers in the country to recognize that it was quite impossible for him to write out comments on every student's paper and to turn to shorthand methods of evaluation. He may, in fact, have been one of the first to present the argument that using symbols was pedagogically justifiable because it forced students to locate their own errors.
