Technology Use by Older Adults

Resumo

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) seem to have a positive impact on senior communities and they could help to promote independent living at home. However, the interface design is not always adapted to this population.Given the current demands for delivering online the Income Tax Treaty Documents (using the website «e-fatura»), this fact may cause an additional barrier for senior citizens, who have never used a computer before. Thus, the purpose of this study was: identify the senior's difficulties when using «e-fatura»; evaluate the website usability and verify if it is considered an age-friendly website for this specific group of people. This is an exploratory study with direct observation, where the participants performed a set of tasks, evaluated in the five parameters: tasks' completion, completion time, number, types of errors and the requesting for help. These were later compared to evaluation heuristics. The «e-fatura» website has flaws that must be reviewed in order to improve a better usability for the senior citizen population.
