ResumoTwenty-seven patients with various types of refractory epileptiform seizures were included in an open trial of a new anticonvulsant clonazepam. The main benefit was derived by the parenteral use of clonazepam in the treatment of various forms of status epilepticus, where it was very effective. Orally, clonazepam was most beneficial in patients with refractory petit-mal seizures, although a common side effect of behaviour disorder may limit its usefulness and its employment as an adjuvant at lower doses to current anticonvulsant regimes is currently being explored. Photomyoclonic epilepsy also responds extremely well to clonazepam. However, with other forms of epileptiform seizures, orally administered clonazepam offers few advantages over existing medications.
