Este trabalho procura explorar o lugar que a doutrina da predestinacao ocupa na teologia de Joao Calvino (1509-1564). Em primeiro lugar, argumenta-se que a doutrina da predestinacao esta subordinada ao foco principal da sua teologia: a gloria de Deus. Em segundo lugar, que, no pensamento do reformador, a livre agencia do ser humano coexiste pacificamente com a doutrina da eleicao eterna de Deus. Por ultimo, que na teologia de Joao Calvino, sem a doutrina da predestinacao nao pode existir verdadeira piedade crista.This paper explores the place of the doctrine of predestination in John Calvin’s (1509-1564) theology. First, it is argued that the doctrine of predestination is subordinate to the focus of Calvin’s theology: the glory of God. Second, it explores how, in the reformer’s theology, the doctrine of God’s eternal election pacifically coexists with the free agency of the human being. Finally, it seeks to demonstrate that, for Calvin, without the doctrine of predestination, there is no possibility of achieving true Christian piety.
