ResumoPoultry farming is an important activity that generates income for the farmers of the municipalities that are part of the Zona da Mata Mineira region, including the city of Canaã.Composting is a way to treat waste from large-scale production of chickens. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate, through a rapid participatory diagnosis (PRD), whether the rural producers of the municipality received some course on composting and other sustainability techniques as well as if they understood the importance of these practices and abandoned the old habits.Poultry farmers began production of broilers in the middle of 1990, but only in 2005 they were asked to build composts, but there was no training course. The major benefit from the installation of the composites was the reduction of the characteristic bad smell of the decomposition process. All the results obtained shows the producers perception of the environmental degradation present in their properties, as well as their yearnings for changes in this scenario.
