ResumoThe following work aims to analyse the novel Ashes of the Amazon (2005), by Milton Hatoum, in order to verify how -in its thematic approach and in its structural composition -is organized a critique against the military dictatorship (1964-1985) and against the contradictions of Brazilian modernity, highlighting, at the same time, a crisis of the national patriarchy. In this sense, we use the theoretical observations concerning the modern novel by, for example, Moretti (2005) and Rosenfeld (1996).For the achievement of the proposal, we will use, likewise, the reflections about the modern divergences exposed by Benjamin (1994), Berman (1986), Domingues (2002), among others.Ultimately, highlighting the relation between historical content and artistic form, we believe that the novel Ashes of the Amazon fetch configured in its own structure a critique that demarcates certain evolution of the novel genre.
