ResumoBuriti (Mauritia flexuosa) is a palm tree from the Amazon rainforest and is in a great abundance in flooded forest areas of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Its fruits are of a tremendous interest in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. The chemical compositions of this plant play a major role in the biological properties of buriti, among them, terpenoids (especially carotenoids), steroids, tocochromanols, organic acids, simple phenolics, and flavonoids. These compounds contribute to the remarkable antioxidant activity of buriti fruits. This chapter reviews botanical aspects, biological activities, nutritional facts, and phytochemistry of M. flexuosa.
