ISBN 978-0-06-279654-7 $10.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 7-10 This eclectic collection of six short stories imagines futures of romantic dreamscape meetups, teens hunting extraterrestrial leeches, musical savants attuned to the music of death and life, pilfered "Elucidation Protocol" devices that help a girl pick a prom date, and stories that further the mythos of Roth's Carve the Mark series (Carve the Mark, BCCB 3/17). For the most part, each entry features the lightest touch of sci-fi to bolster tales of teens in varied precarious situations—from crushes to bumpy friendships to avenging the death of a loved one—and later entries are noticeably more fantasy than sci-fi, which may meet the expectations of Carve the Mark fans but is somewhat divergent (ahem) from the titular promise of stories from the future. A collection like Dayton's Stronger, Faster, and More Beautiful (BCCB 1/19) may therefore be more on thematic point for readers looking for a cohesive futuristic, but Roth continues to deliver thoughtfully executed world building to her fans; powerful line art and distinctively designed page edges add drama.
