ISBN 978-0-06-240640-8 $8.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 4-7 Thirteen-year-old Corey Fletcher has just learned he is a throwback, a supposedly impossible kind of time traveler who can actually change the past. Determined to save his grandmother from her tragic death on 9/11, he immediately heads for the past but overshoots, finding himself in 1917 New York. There he falls in with all manner of colorful characters, from street hustlers and violent gangs to bully cops and helpful drunks, including the ropin', ridin', yee-hawin' cowboy Quinn [End Page 129] who has secrets of his own. Meanwhile, back in the present, Corey's best friend Leila works to get him home, only to discover that she may have the power to join him on his next adventure. Nimbly shifting between timelines and points of view while never losing sight of Corey's central quest, this first in a planned series skillfully sets up sequels on the way to a surprising but satisfying conclusion. The plot rockets along but notably avoids sacrificing details for pace, and it offers up plenty of word puzzles, trivia, and bits of New York history along the way. Corey and Leila aren't deep characters, but they are likable, genuine, and brave, just the kind of kids that readers would want to join on an adventure, including this one and those to come.
