“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”—Helen Keller As we approach the end of the 2019 calendar year, we wish all of our readers, authors, and reviewers a healthy and prosperous new year. During 2019, the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) has continued to be the leading international journal in vascular and endovascular surgery, with a special focus on aortic, cerebrovascular, and peripheral arterial diseases, vascular trauma, vascular access, arteriovenous malformations, education, and practice management. The 2018 Impact Factor, a calculation that includes 4436 citations to JVS, is 3.243, and JVS′ CiteScore is 2.50. In 2018, full-text downloads of JVS articles from ScienceDirect, Clinical Key, and the journal-based site www.jvascsurg.org totaled 4,071,757 compared with just under 2.5 million downloads in 2015. The number of online monthly visits to our journal-based site alone reached nearly 61,000. For submitting outstanding manuscripts, we are grateful to all our authors, especially those whose works, published in 2016 and 2017, were most highly cited in 2018 and contributed to both our Impact Factor and CiteScore (Table).TableTop 10 cited manuscripts in 2018 published in 2016-2017RankYearDocument titleAuthors2018 citesAll cites12016Fenestrated and branched endovascular aneurysm repair outcomes for type II and III thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysmsEagleton MJ, Follansbee M, Wolski K, Mastracci T, Kuramochi Y337722016The management of diabetic foot: a clinical practice guideline by the Society for Vascular Surgery in collaboration with the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Society for Vascular MedicineHingorani A, Lamuraglia GM, Henke P, Meissner MH, Loretz L, Zinszer KM, Driver VR, Frykberg R, Carman TL, Marston W, Mills JL, Murad MH328032016Reporting standards of the Society for Vascular Surgery for endovascular treatment of chronic lower extremity peripheral artery disease: executive summaryStoner MC, Calligaro KD, Chaer RA, Dietzek AM, Farber A, Guzman RJ, Hamdan AD, Landry GJ, Yamaguchi DJ294942017Prospective, nonrandomized study to evaluate endovascular repair of pararenal and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms using fenestrated-branched endografts based on supraceliac sealing zonesOderich GS, Ribeiro M, Hofer J, Wigham J, Cha S, Chini J, Macedo TA, Gloviczki P254452016The PROTAGORAS study to evaluate the performance of the Endurant stent graft for patients with pararenal pathologic processes treated by the chimney/snorkel endovascular techniqueDonas KP, Torsello GB, Piccoli G, Pitoulias GA, Torsello GF, Bisdas T, Austermann M, Gasparini D246362016Contemporary cardiovascular risk and secondary preventive drug treatment patterns in peripheral artery disease patients undergoing revascularizationSigvant B, Kragsterman B, Falkenberg M, Hasvold P, Johansson S, Thuresson M, Nordanstig J203272017Outcomes of fenestrated and branched endovascular repair of complex abdominal and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysmsSchanzer A, Simons JP, Flahive J, Durgin J, Aiello FA, Doucet D, Steppacher R, Messina LM162482017The effect of surgeon and hospital volume on mortality after open and endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysmsZettervall SL, Schermerhorn ML, Soden PA, McCallum JC, Shean KE, Deery SE, O'Malley AJ, Landon B152792017One-year pivotal trial outcomes of the Nellix system for endovascular aneurysm sealingCarpenter JP, Cuff R, Buckley C, Healey C, Hussain S, Reijnen MM, Trani J, Bockler D1524102016Durability of the balloon-expandable covered versus bare-metal stents in the Covered versus Balloon Expandable Stent Trial (COBEST) for the treatment of aortoiliac occlusive diseaseMwipatayi BP, Sharma S, Daneshmand A, Thomas SD, Vijayan V, Altaf N, Garbowski M, Jackson M, Benveniste G, Denton M, Anderson J, Dubenec S, Neale M, Puttaswamy V, Fletcher J1533 Open table in a new tab In 2019, we launched several important initiatives that enhance the family of JVS publications. We are pleased to report on these and on the impact they have on the broad field of vascular disease prevention and management. Most important, there is now a fourth member of the JVS family, called JVS Vascular Science (JVS-VS). This Journal was initiated to address the need for a dedicated premier international journal publishing “bench-to-bedside” translational research and the underlying modern medical, endovascular, and surgical investigation and management of vascular diseases. JVS-VS will publish the ever-increasing number of relevant papers that report important scientific advances, test new hypotheses, propose and define new treatments, and address current controversies in vascular diseases and their management. JVS-VS will look into the future to answer key questions. What will vascular care and practice look like going forward? How can we define future care for patients with vascular disease? JVS-VS will be an integral part of the JVS family, with a dedicated science Editor, Dr Alan Dardik, and Associate Editors, Drs Ulka Sachdev, John A. Cursi, and Ulf Hedin, who will lead an international editorial board of basic, translational, and clinical scientists. Another major initiative implemented this year is the division of our single submission and peer review website into separate sites for each Journal. The result is that authors may now submit their papers to the Journal of their choice rather than waiting for the Editor to make this decision at the end of the review process. This change will also allow our reviewers to participate in journals that fit their clinical and research expertise. Other important developments involve the continuing major expansion of our social media program. Our two major clinical journals, Journal of Vascular Surgery and Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, have a short video produced for each issue, introducing four exceptional and impactful articles selected by the editors. These articles are also associated with a Visual Abstract, a small pictorial representation of the article's key message, which is shared widely on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Visual Abstracts allow readers to quickly determine their interest in reading the full article and provide a link to the full, free to read article for the first 2 months of publication. The quality of the Visual Abstracts will be enhanced with the beautiful illustrations of renowned emeritus Mayo Clinic artist David Factor. In 2019, we also started a partnership with Audible Bleeding, an innovative podcast led by Drs Sharif Ellozy, Adam Johnson, and Nicole Rich. Audible Bleeding has a significant following of more than 10,000 and is a great avenue for highlighting some of the best papers in our Journals. Social media is an increasingly important way for current and future generations of vascular specialists to rapidly view, download, share, and cite our Journal articles as much as our senior readership does with the print Journal. Paul DiMuzio leads our entire social media initiative with Daniel Han, who is also doing yeoman's work in developing visual abstracts. Another important initiative is our effort to standardize the peer review process by using templates for new reviewers (available here: https://bit.ly/2YDiqJz) to make sure the same issues are considered when reviewing each paper. This will result in more systematic feedback to authors, help revisions, and improve consistency in the review process. Standardization is helpful at a time when there is record increase in manuscript submissions. Time from submission to publication will also continue to be decreased, thanks to additional administrative support we received from the Society for Vascular Surgery. Progress would not have been possible without our excellent editorial staff, Tyler Cosgrove and Carlee Green, headed by JVS-Venous and Lymphatic Disorders Managing Editor, Alexandria Sese, and by our stellar Senior Managing Editor, Jessica McEwan. For their help, enthusiasm, expertise, and hard work, we are extremely grateful. In sum, our Journals continue to grow in volume and improve in quality. We greatly appreciate the valuable contributions of our expert associate and assistant editors, our superb editorial boards, our excellent reviewers, and all our contributing authors around the world. It takes a team effort to make the advances that have occurred over the past years, and as American author Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Working with you all and with each of our sponsoring societies, we will further improve the JVS publications, with the goal of having each Journal being the leading international Journal in its respective field. Peer review plays an essential role in scientific publishing. Peer reviewers validate the credibility of scientific research; they improve the quality of the manuscripts and provide valuable input to the editors to make key decisions on the fate of the manuscripts. Peer reviewers unselfishly provide their time and expertise to our Journals, our societies, and our publisher. For all their efforts, we are extremely grateful. We would like to acknowledge our excellent Associate and Assistant Editors who helped us in 2019 to deal with the increasing number of submissions, without compromising the high quality of the articles published in JVS. Drs Thomas L. Forbes and Fred A. Weaver served as Associate Editors for Clinical Studies and made key decisions on hundreds of manuscripts. We are thankful for the expert contributions of our Associate Editor for Basic Science, Dr Alan Dardik, who also starts now in his new role as Editor of JVS-VS. We are indebted to Dr Keith Calligaro for his insightful and witty comments and great summaries of the Vascular Vantage Point: Review and Commentary of Key non-JVS Publications. We are thankful to Dr Michael C. Dalsing for his expert help as Assistant Editor of Reviews. As discussed in our editorial, Dr Paul J. DiMuzio, Editor for Social Media and Press Releases, with the help of newly elected assistant editor Dr Daniel Han, increased our on-line readership tremendously on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter and with the production of press releases, Visual Abstracts, and the JVS Journal club. We are thankful for the valuable contributions made by our excellent Editorial Board in 2019. In addition to the review and re-review of a large number of original articles, our editorial board members frequently contributed to JVS with commentaries and editorials. Members of the Editorial Board performed an average of 15 reviews each year, and during 2019, this accounted for 31% of all the reviews performed. The Editors would like to recognize the significant contributions of those Editorial Board members who, after many years of valuable service, will be retiring from the Board this month. We also would like to welcome the new members of the Editorial Board of JVS and JVS Cases and Innovative Techniques, who will start their assignments in January 2020. Ahmed M.
