ResumoA study was conducted in three socio-cultural zones viz. Majha, Malwa and Doaba of Punjab to understand the problems of self help groups in managing the group activities. An interview schedule was developed to collect data on problems encountered by the members of self help groups in management of group activities from 200 women members of 12 self help groups (SHG's) selected by using multi-stage sampling design. Marketing problem emerged as the most serious hurdle perceived by the members of the SHG's with the average percentage mean score of 58.33. It was followed by production problems (mean score 53), family problems (mean score 40.5). Other problems faced by the members were leadership problems, organizational problems, financial problems and social problems. There is need to overcome these hurdles by providing appropriate facilities for smooth functioning of self help groups. Further the problems encountered by the women of self help groups in the study facilitate the stake holders for better future planning regarding formation and working of the group.
