Resumo

In response to the recommendations in Computing Curricula 2001 and market demands, an increasing number of institutions are integrating courses on Web programming and net-centric computing into their curriculum as core courses or electives. Many institutions face budget restrictions that make it difficult to use proprietary software. Instructors at such institutions are naturally turning to open source, freeware, and shareware resources for use in their courses. In addition to being attractive from a monetary standpoint, open source software offers several advantages over proprietary software. Often a large community of developers has contributed to the software, which can result in a particularly robust and reliable product. Even more importantly, students can download the software to personal PCs for use in the course or further exploration. This tutorial will provide an overview of nifty open source, freeware, and shareware software that we have successfully used in a variety of Web programming courses with net-centric components.
