espanolLa crisis financiera internacional ha provocado intensos debates academicos y politicos acerca de la naturaleza de los problemas que enfrenta la economia global y ha complejizado la discusion sobre la respuesta de politica economica mas apropiada. Este nuevo contexto internacional, sumado a la crisis de identidad en la que se sumio el Fondo Monetario Internacional en los ultimos anos, ha significado un intenso debate sobre cual debiera ser el nuevo rol a llevar adelante por esta institucion.En ese sentido, ha habido un creciente consenso sobre la necesidad de cambios en el funciona-miento del FMI y en el menu de instrumentos financieros que este ofrece. En este trabajo se revisael impacto que tienen las reformas en el FMI en su relacion con America Latina. Este vinculo, si bien ha sido historicamente muy estrecho, esta lejos de haber sido armonico y estable. Por ello, en este articulo se revisa la relacion de los paises de America Latina con el FMI, con el proposito de esclarecer los vinculos existentes entre el desempeno macroeconomico de los paises, el papel asumido por el Fondo y las caracteristicas de los programas con los que la institucion ha operado en la region. Adicionalmente se analizan las reformas implementadas recientemente en el FMI, su relacion con las transformaciones demandadas por algunos de los paises que integran la institucion y las debilidades que aun persisten en la estructura de gobierno y en la operativa de la institucion.Por ultimo, se analizan los cambios implementados desde la perspectiva y los intereses de la region, poniendo el enfasis en el posible impacto de la reforma. EnglishThe global financial crisis has generated intense academic and political debates about the natureof the problems being faced by the global economy, and it has made more complex the discussionon the subject of which is the most suitable response of economic policy. This new internationalcontext, added to the identity crisis in which the International Monetary Fund immersed itself du -ring the last years, meant a strong discussion about which should be the new role taken by this insti -tution. In this sense, there has been a growing consensus about the changes needed in theoperation of the IMF and in the menu of financial instruments offered by it. This article examinesthe impact produced by the reforms in the IMF in its relation with Latin America. This relationalthough historically has been tight, it has been far from being harmonic and stable. Hence, this arti-cle analyzes the relationship between Latin American countries and the IMF, in order to clarify theexisting links among the macroeconomic performance of the countries, the role assumed by the IMFand the characteristics of the programs with which the institution has operated in the region. Additionally, the article analyzes the reforms recently implemented by the IMF, its relation with the changes demanded by some of the member countries of the institution and the weaknesses that still persist in the structure of government and in the operations of the institution. Finally, the changes implemented are examined from the perspective and the interests of the region, with anemphasis in the potential impact of the reform.
