Resumo

Mapiko is a cultural manifestation of Mozambique, specifically of the Maconde people of Cabo Delgado province in the north of the country.Surrounded by mysteries and secrets, to the sound of traditional songs and drums, the masked Mapiko represents the imagination of the Maconde people. The Mapiko tradition presents the ancestral world and the connection between the main dancer and his beliefs, giving the ability to recreate in art the different ways of being in the spiritual life, using the force of his history and his daily life, transmitting in each dance his beliefs. This article approaches the Mapiko tradition, its variations and transformations over the years, correlating the political history of the country and discussing questions about the tradition, its adaptations, modifications, resistances and survivors.
