EnglishThis study seeks to measure the participation of priests of the Society of Jesus, especially the Czech Father Valentim Estancel, in the educational and scientific development of Colonial Brazil by highlighting their activities in the political-religious and scientific transformations that occurred in Brazil and Europe in the 16th and 18th centuries. Father Valentim Estancel was born in Olomouc, in the former kingdom of Moravia, in the present Czech Republic, in 1621. His intellectual career began in his hometown, passing through the Czech cities of Brno, Jicin and Prague, capital of the kingdom of Bohemia. In 1655 Valentim Estancel left for Rome, a city where he expanded his connections by contacting great names in science and Jesuit science. The following year he left for Portugal where he lived for six years becoming a teacher of the Aula da Esfera, one of the most advanced nautical science teaching centers in Europe at the time. In 1663 he arrived in Brazil where he lived 42 years. In the mission of Brazil he took turns among the colleges of Bahia, where he taught Moral Theology and was Lente of Mathematics, and Pernambuco, where he was Prefect of Studies and was Lente of Cases of Conscience. Father Valentim Estancel, in addition to these obligations as a scholastic Jesuit, observed the skies and wrote books on various topics of great repercussion in Europe. Father Valentim Estancel died in 1705, in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil at the age of 84 and was one of the first introducers of science in Brazil. portuguesEste estudo procura dimensionar a participacao de padres da Companhia de Jesus, em especial do padre tcheco Valentim Estancel, no desenvolvimento educacional e cientifico do Brasil Colonial ao realcar suas atividades nas transformacoes politico-religiosas e cientificas ocorridas no Brasil e na Europa nos seculos XVI e XVII. O padre Valentim Estancel nasceu em Olomouc, no antigo reino da Moravia, na atual Republica Tcheca, em 1621. Sua trajetoria intelectual comecou em sua cidade natal, passou pelas cidades tchecas de Brno, Jicin e Praga, capital do reino da Boemia. No ano de 1655 Valentim Estancel partiu para Roma, cidade em que expandiu suas conexoes ao entrar em contato com grandes nomes da ciencia e da ciencia jesuitica. No ano seguinte partiu para Portugal onde viveu por seis anos se tornando professor da Aula da Esfera, um dos mais avancados centros de ensino sobre ciencia nautica da Europa na altura. Em 1663 chegou ao Brasil onde viveu 42 anos. Na missao do Brasil revezava-se entre os colegios da Bahia, onde lecionou Teologia Moral e foi Lente de Matematica, e de Pernambuco, onde foi Prefeito dos Estudos e foi Lente de Casos de Consciencia. O padre Valentim Estancel, alem dessas obrigacoes como jesuita escolastico, observou os ceus e escreveu livros sobre diversos temas de grande repercussao na Europa. O padre Valentim Estancel morreu no ano de 1705, em Salvador da Bahia, Brasil aos 84 anos de idade tendo sido um dos primeiros introdutores da ciencia no Brasil.
