ResumoThe interest in indivisibles in studies of the motion of freely falling bodies was confirmed in Galileo’s use of indivisibles from 1604 onwards. Beginning in 1621, Bonaventura Cavalieri worked out a new geometrical method that played an important part in clarifying the empirical use of indivisibles in this field. In a demonstration published in 1632 in the Dialogo, Galileo showed clearly the way in which the «total speed » is generated as an aggregate of «degrees of speed. » Some months later, Cavalieri gave, in Lo Specchio Ustorio, his own demonstration of the result obtained by Galileo, specifying the role played by the aggregate of indivisibles. This use of the aggregate of indivisibles is present in Galileo’s Discorsi, published in 1638, and in some of Torricelli’s writings.
