Based on stories by estimable author Noelle Stevenson, this outing brings Adora and the gang on a new adventure to try and retrieve the Spirit Ember, a runestone believed to be lost by the legendary Fire Princess after its power corrupted her and resulted in the destruction of the Fire Kingdom. As is to be expected, Hordak has sent Catra and Entrapta to find the Ember as well, and the rebels must use their wits and friendship to keep this powerful weapon from the Horde. Newcomers interested in starting the series should should be aware that spoilers are rife and introductions to the characters are nowhere to be found, but the initiated will appreciate the spot-on characters, comic misunderstandings, magical peril, and a brief respite from the agony of waiting for the next season of the show. Ganucheau has a softer style than viewers are used to, but her rounder faces and thicker lines allow for the more nuanced reactions and fluid movements necessary to make a comic pop. The final version will feature full-color illustrations in the jewel-toned hues of animated Etheria. Copyright © 2020 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
